It was such a treat to go out last night for dinner wearing light summer clothes and for it to be warm still when walking home at 12.30 am. We are into Spanish eating times of course so dinner was at 10.00 pm after a promenade along one of the main streets (no cars) of town. We were with Elizabeth and Peter plus a Swedish friend Christian and his 10-year old daughter Kirsten.
La Coruña is a magnificent city, with the Spanish architectural style of glassed-in balconies very common; this was the first Spanish city to have these balconies from the 1800's when a local architect designed them. It is also the city where the fashion chain Zara first began, the owner firstly selling fabrics from a small store here and then opening his first Zara store. The main plaza is huge, with a magnificent town hall along one side and a colonnade with cafes around the other three sides, and hanging flower baskets adding to the scene. Above the cafes are the apartments with their glassed-in balconies.
We had an excellent dinner, sharing starters of outstanding fresh oysters, cod croquettes, quail egg and jamon on small bread toasts like bruschettas, and grilled baby squid. Greg and I then shared a shoulder of lamb served with sliced potatoes -delicious. The main local wine is Aborino, a dry white, which we all enjoyed sufficiently to drink a few bottles of it over dinner. We also liked the two Spanish 'digestives', suggested to us by a couple of guys from Mexico who were at the next table. Great night!
