September 16

We visited an area of Palma old town that we have not been to before - the Es Baluard Museum of modern art and the streets nearby. The museum has a special sculpture terrace, where there are spectacular views over the bay. I would love to return to see the interior and to visit the terrace cafe.

As we left the museum we made our way toward the centre of old town, passing a beautiful old church and strolling along charming little streets. We stumbled across a fantastic cafe, C'an Toni, obviously monopolised by the locals, where the specials of the day were roasted suckling pig or lamb shoulder plus other meat and vegetable dishes, all on display to choose from. They also had a regular menu of rustic meals such as the oxtail, chosen by Greg and John. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals and considered ourselves fortunate to have found such a place well away from other tourists.

I also took the team to Rialto Living, the interesting home decor and clothing store, where Chris and I had coffee while the guys headed back to the boat, leaving us to wander around the shoe shops. Many of the Spanish shoe designers are on Mallorca, including Camper, with a large leather industry in Inca. I don't know why I haven't ever been to their factory outlet stores!

We had dinner at the restaurant Es Baluard, next door to the museum of the same name. They specialise in traditional Mallorcan cuisine and everything we had was very good, but not as exceptional as many other restaurants we have been to. We are continually surprised about how large the serves are here at most restaurants, especially the first courses; it's better to share meals unless you are very hungry.
