South to Lisbon

Our trip to Lisbon was a long one, so we left early afternoon on a high tide out of the Douro Marina and travelled through the night, arriving at the marina at the entrance to the Teja River about midday. It was a calm trip, with only the rolling Atlantic waves to deal with and many little buoys and flags of fishermen's pots or nets to watch out for. We were able to sit below at the dining table for our evening meal which I was able to cook while we were travelling. Large pods of dolphins entertained us before and after dinner and a full moon helped the person on watch during the night.

We were berthed at the Porto de Recreio Oeiras Marina at the mouth of the River Tejo, about 30 km down the river from Lisbon. It was the only marina deep enough for us, apart from one close to the city under a major train and road bridge and we were warned not to stay there because of the traffic noise. There were several shops and cafes plus good facilities at the marina, including a pool, so it was easy to get a snack on our first night and go to bed early.
