We are currently on our way to Porto, Portugal and are looking forward to spending two or three days there. We originally didn't think we could go there because the river entrance is shallow but there is a new marina now and so they are keeping part of the entrance and a track up the river dredged.
We really enjoyed our afternoon and night at Baiona, a very attractive town with great beaches all around it and an old castle beside the marina which is now a parador hotel. The original wall and grounds surround the hotel so we walked the perimeter, with fabulous views out to the islands, the surrounding beaches, part of the town and the marina. A replica of Pinta, one of the boats of Christopher Columbus, is in the harbour because Columbus came to Baiona after travelling to the 'New World'. Anne and Richard walked around the town more than we had time for and said that there were lovely streets of restaurants and quite classy shops. It would have been better if we had skipped the anchorage of the previous night and had more time in Baiona, but we do realise that our enjoyment of the area was helped by the fact that it was sunny and relatively warm.
The marina was the Monte Real Club de Yates. 'Real' means that it is a 'royal' yacht club and the club house is beautiful, so we had an excellent dinner there on the verandah, overlooking the boats.
Now we are back to clouds and a cool breeze again, but not enough breeze to sail of course. As this is a ten hour trip we are hopeful that the sun will break through soon. We are going to have tortilla Espagnole for lunch, which is a fabulous frittata made with eggs and potatoes. We had some as one of our starters last night at the club and then ordered a big one to take away.
